“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
John 19:30 NIV
When someone undertakes a task or a project on our behalf, we can gain great respect and admiration for that person. When that person completes that task for us and it proves to be one of great value to us in many ways, that admiration grows to deeper levels of thankfulness and respect. We will carry with us for the rest of our lives the testimony of what that person did for us and tell others of their efforts and our devotion for them.
In this verse, we hear Jesus proclaim that his work for the Father to save mankind is finished. The planning over the centuries was complete. The events needed to finish the work had been performed. The sacrifice had been made. The one who had no debt, no lack, no need for the sacrifice made it anyway. The cost was enormous but he paid it for you and me! Why would someone do so much for those who don’t deserve such a gift? Simple my friends, it was done out of love!
Three times in the Bible, the Lord proclaims it is done/finished. Each time was at the completion of a monumental task being performed: creation of the universe, salvation at the cross, and the creation of the new heaven an earth. These miraculous events were done for those whom God had created. They signify his great love for us and his promise to never forsake us nor desert us.
Jesus called out to us before his death, it is done, price paid, I love you. Never doubt my friends, that one who created you loves you!
In Christ
