Godly Sorrow

“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭51‬:‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬

One of the greatest needs of mankind is the ability to recognize our deep and profound need for forgiveness. Volumes have been written about the awesome love of our Lord providing us a way of salvation and redemption. This is certainly one of the most glorious gifts and events of all history. But, without an awareness of our need to confess our sin with a contrite heart, that gift of salvation goes wanting.

There are two kinds of confession in our society. One of worldly confession that states that we are sorrowful because we got caught not because we are truly remorse over our actions. The second is one of Godly remorse for our actions and a desire to repent and change our ways. Confession’s root is from the Greek that says to agree or admit to something. Our confession to the Lord is stating we are agreeing with God about our actions or words and asking God for forgiveness. We seek to change our ways, change our lives to agree with what God says.

If the confession of our sins becomes a habit before God, we have lost that contrite heart that knows we have come short of the will of our Lord. Real confession leads us to redemption and forgiveness where our relationship with God is restored. God’s grace and mercy are unbelievable gifts to us but can only be obtained when we understand our need for Godly Sorrow and repentance!
