Do We Know Who We Are?

“Jesus told them, “These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t know this about me.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

One of the most foundational questions in our lives is who are we? Many of life’s issues and problems come from people not having a firm grasp on who they are and what they stand for. Peer pressure and societal demands can place significant stress on our life to conform or to believe a certain way, act a certain way. I believe it is vital for everyone of us to have a clear and honest appraisal of who we are so that we can truly function in the most positive and effective manner.

Jesus spent some time in his ministry telling others who he was, defining his purpose and stating his goals for his life. Jesus’ statement in our verse today shows us that Jesus knew where he had come from and where he was going. He was firmly fixed on his identity and purpose. How many of us can share so boldly that we know where we have come from and know where we are going? With Jesus, we know we were lost before him, slaves to a sin nature that leads to destruction. But, now we are confident of our future and our purpose in Christ.

People who know who they are, who know their past and future, are people who will not be pressured to live a life they don’t believe in. They have been given hope, given love and given purpose. Those people are the ones who have been redeemed by our Lord and are his light in the darkness! We can only truly know who we are when become what God created us for, people who love and worship him. Then, we are complete!

In Christ
