“Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.””
John 21:22 NIV
In the gospels, there are more than just a few incidents where Jesus told others to follow him. We know about the twelve he chose to be his disciples but there were many other examples of his calling to others like the rich young ruler to follow him. In reading these accounts, I have come away with a very simple but powerful truth about following Jesus Christ. This simple truth has helped me to clarify my role in the kingdom and keep me grounded in my attempt of humble service.
We all face numerous issues in our lives. Things such as family problems, work issues, health issues and relational problems make our days sometimes very complex and difficult. Here is where this simple truth comes into play. When I arise in the morning, I simply focus on the one command that Jesus gave his followers: follow me. If I follow him, his teachings, his directions, his compassion, everything will take care of itself. He has told us he will love us forever, will provide for us, protect us, redeem us and empower us. There is nothing left undone, unsaid that we need in our lives. He is truly our source and strength.
You see, rather than be anxious about the things of life, we need to simply follow him, trust him! If indeed we follow him, every issue, every need will be addressed. There is such peace is just trusting the one who has called us into his marvelous light. We need to just simply follow!
